This shawl is taken from Frederic, Lord Leighton’s (British, 1830–1896) Study for Daphnephoria, an ancient festival that was held every nine years to honor Apollo—whose floral symbol was the laurel (daphne in Greek). Leighton, who served as President of the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1896, was also the most influential artist in Late Victorian England, and is best known for his works depicting classical subject matter.
