Rosa Bonheur: All Nature’s Children. New York, Dahesh Museum of Art, 1996, 186pp.

The Museum’s first exhibition catalogue is the only English-language publication in print on 19th-century France’s finest animal painter and includes a chronology of her life, bibliography and essays by five outstanding scholars: Gabriel P. Weisberg, Britta C. Dwyer, Helene Lafont-Couturier, Cristina Portell, and Annie-Paule Quinsac.

Rosa Bonheur (18221899) was the finest French animal painter of the 19th century. Despite an unconventional artistic training and life, she was immensely successful during a six-decade career and was the first woman to receive France’s highest award, the Legion of Honor.

All Nature’s Children is the first complete retrospective exhibition of Rosa Bonheur’s work in the 20th century. Organized by the Musee de l’Ecole Barbizon-Auberge Ganne, Barbizon, and the Dahesh Museum, New York, it comprises a choice selection of paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints that survey her long and active artistic life. This publication is the first English-language study of her art in many years and includes a detailed chronology of her life, five essays by specialists, a list of works in the exhibition, a bibliography and many color and black-and-white illustrations.
